Two weeks until 2014.

Two weeks until 2014.

One year ago I took on the challenge of trying one new recipe each week, one new thing each month and being happy.

With two weeks to go, I have tried 31 of 52 recipes, 11 of 12 new things (trying my 12th tomorrow!) and I am trying every day to be happy.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say I probably won’t be trying 21 recipes within the next two weeks, although anything is possible, don’t get me wrong. Goals are what you strive for and you don’t always complete them on time, but it is always good to have them.

This year has been full of transitions and new experiences. I went from being a full-time student to a career woman. I went from living in my home of 25 years to my new house of two weeks.  I left the country for the first time and traveled to the Eiffel tower. I ran 15 miles, the farthest distance I have ever ran in my entire life. I became a registered dietitian, my ultimate goal of my career (for now). I took piano lessons, a dream I have had since I was a little girl. 2013 has been a pretty great year, and I just have a feeling 2014 is going to be even better.

I know a lot of people don’t want to get older and want to be 23 forever. Every day I get older and at every birthday dinner, I feel thankful for everything I have learned and will learn in the future. I am not saying I want to be 55 (although my friends will say I already am, and I would happily agree with them), but maturing, learning new things and gaining wisdom comes with age therefore I embrace it. I should try one new thing each month for the rest of my life. There are just SO many things out there. I have never skied, been to California, Utah, Wisconsin, Iowa etc. , bungee jumped, had a facial, been swept off my feet, done trapeze, bought the coffee for the person behind me in a Starbucks line just because and sooooooooooo much more.

It is very easy to go weeks without trying something new, months, even years. Getting (stuck) in a routine is something that happens, it is easy and comfortable. Don’t get me wrong, I really do like routine, but I also really love trying new things. The experience, the people, the knowledge… it is a great thing.

Don’t forget to try something new every once in a while, even if you have to do it by yourself.

With experience comes growth.
